Lab-on-a-chip

Lab-on-a-chip is one of the most exciting new technologies that incorporates laboratories and  mobile technology to create solutions that can be used everywhere. But what are the advantages of these chips and what can be done with them? It is a very versatile concept, so there are many different kinds of them. To understand all the purposes and advantages it is important to first understand the concept.

What is a lab-on-a-chip?

A lab-on-a-chip is a chip that uses a channel structure to lead fluids trough one or more laboratory functions. This system is built on a chip, so that is portable and can be used in many situations. With many different appliances, these chips are very versatile and can be used for many purposes. And because these chips are built with basic building blocks, they can be easily expanded to perform many functions. The technology used to build these chips originates from the science world, where it is important to measure on a very small scale. But nowadays the technology has expanded and it is used in many areas, such as medical analysis.

Where are lab-on-a-chip devices used?

Many different fields benefit from the easy to use devices that use lab-on-a-chip technology. For example, in the medical world these devices are used to quickly measure certain levels in the human body, where they get almost immediate test results. Compared with the traditional way, which is sending it to an old-fashioned laboratory and waiting for the test results, this is way quicker. But also in the very fast growing field of cell research this technology cuts waiting time by a drastic amount. Researchers no longer have to wait for test results, but get their results back in minutes, instead of days.
